Laser Skin Treatments

We have a full range of specialized dermatologic laser and light devices, so we can offer you a complete set of services for revitalization and renewal of your skin. You can feel comfortable about your treatment at our office, knowing that only your dermatologist will operate the laser and intensely pulsed light devices on your skin. We feel that is the best way to get effective results with the fewest number of treatments and minimize the risk of complications.

Our office philosophy is that we only buy powerful lasers that we know will produce effective results for our patients. It sounds obvious, but there are many laser treatments offered in the marketplace that simply do not produce much effect, or are used for a wide variety of conditions but not optimized for any treatment. In many other offices, the operators are not dermatologists, are very often are not doctors, and some cases are not even closely supervised by any doctor.

At our office, your dermatologist will personally be assessing your skin and operating the devices, so you can feel comfortable that the right device will be used properly and safely for your skin conditions, for the maximum benefits with the fewest number of treatments.

There are five broad categories of cosmetic laser treatments we offer:

These treatments will be specifically tailored to your skin condition and lifestyle by your dermatologist, based on your particular needs for renewal. Talk to your dermatologist about which treatments are most effective for you, and which may not be necessary.

We like to be upfront and honest with patients that revitalization of your skin is often not a quick fix. It can be thought of more as a journey, and it often requires multiple treatments with multiple lasers. If you are seeking a silver bullet to undo years of sun damage and aging, we are probably not the best office to sell you that promise, because it is probably not realistic. And it is our view that laser treatments typically represent just one of several pillars that support a rejuvenation effort. Optimal rejuvenation for aging and damage starts today with prevention of additional sun damage and involves a variety of treatment modalities combining lasers along with Botox, fillers, and daily skin products.

Laser treatments for skin conditions are all performed here in the office, often with topical anesthesia. Procedures typically take between 30 and 40 minutes to perform, depending on the size and location of the treated area. While some individuals will notice significant results after just one treatment, particularly with the fractionally ablative resurfacing, many patients will require multiple sessions in order to achieve the desired results.

Recovery from laser procedures varies according to the particular procedure undergone and the individual patient’s skin type. It can vary from just some slight redness to several days of recovery time, depending on the treatment. In all cases, however, patients who have undergone these treatments should avoid sun exposure afterward.

Although laser skin treatment is considered safe for most patients and is typically performed with no long-term complications, there are certain risks associated with any type of medical procedure. While considered rare, risks may include infection, scarring, redness, pigmentation changes, acne, milia (tiny white bumps on the skin), or other complications. Ask your dermatologist about any concerns that you have prior to treatment.

Brown & Red Spot Removal with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

Uneven skin tone is a common aesthetic problem we all notice as we age especially if we have an active lifestyle out in the sun. After years of unprotected sun exposure, you will notice brown spots, freckles, sun spots. You may also notice unwanted vessels around your nose or rosacea on your cheeks. These common concerns can now be removed and you can reveal your glowing complexion.

IPL is ideal for reducing the appearance of pigment on your face, chest or hands including age spots, sun damage, freckles or birthmarks. It is also the perfect solution for unwanted vessels on your face including spider veins, broken vessels or rosacea (redness/flushing of the cheeks). In just a few quick treatment sessions you will see a reduction in the appearance of brown spots and vessels leaving you with a more even skin tone and beautiful looking skin.

Our IPL device utilizes optimized intense pulsed light technology which, unlike lasers, uses many wavelengths of light with special filters that deliver the best wavelengths to treat specific aesthetic conditions. As the hand-piece glides over the area being treated, specialized pulses of light are delivered to your skin and target brown spots, sun-damage, and vessels without causing harm to the surrounding skin. Once these targets absorb the energy they are destroyed and will slowly disappear through your body’s natural healing process. You will see your brown spots turn darker in color and flake off over the next few weeks. You may also see an immediate improvement in your vessels with a continued clearance over the next few weeks.

Our IPL is our dermatologists’ go-to device for sun damaged skin. This treatment is typically the treatment that our dermatologists advise their patients begin with if they have not yet been treated with any laser. Our patients will typically see good results on the first treatment, but multiple treatments are often necessary for optimum results. Patients who have had a lot of sun over the years will typically need to get re-treated every several years to maintain maximum benefit.

Fines Lines, Scars & Texture with Non-Ablative Resurfacing

There are many common aesthetic concerns that bother us with age. Some of these include sun-damage, fine lines, stretch marks and even surgical or acne scars. These bothersome aesthetic conditions can be difficult to improve with other solutions, but with our non-ablative resurfacing laser, we can improve your skin quickly and easily. In just a few short treatment sessions you will see results in both the tone and texture of your skin, leaving you with the skin you’ve been wanting.

Our laser utilizes fractional laser technology to deliver specialized pulses of energy into your skin and targeting your unwanted pigment, wrinkles, stretch marks or scars without causing harm to the surrounding skin. Once the energy is absorbed into the skin your body’s natural healing process will begin creating new, healthy skin in the area that was treated. Over the next few weeks you will see continued improvement in both the coloration and smoothness of your skin.

Non-ablative resurfacing is gentler than ablative resurfacing and requires less downtime. Non-ablative resurfacing treatments do not burn away (ablate) the surface of the skin tissue, but use laser energy to stimulate collagen growth and tighten underlying skin. The effect of this treatment is more subtle, and so typically necessitates several treatment sessions to yield the optimal results.

After treatment, patients may experience redness and peeling at the treated site as the skin heals. The duration of these side effects varies, but is commonly several days. Ice packs may ease discomfort and improve appearance. Normal activities can be resumed during healing, and makeup may be applied to camouflage any unwanted, evidence of treatment.

Total Rejuvenation with Fractionally Ablative Resurfacing

Cosmetic imperfections can appear on our skin at all stages of life and include. TotalFX is a total rejuvenation solution, by treating both deep in the dermis, as well as the skin’s surface.

  • Improves fine lines, wrinkles, scars, tone, texture and pigmentation, all at once
  • Dramatic results in just one treatment
  • Minimal downtime

Taking years off lined and sun-damaged skin like a nonsurgical facelift, ActiveFX achieves immediate, dramatic results that can last for years. It works on multiple levels simultaneously:

  • Tightens skin
  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
  • Smooths frown lines
  • Improves skin tone and texture
  • Reveals fresh skin beneath the aged surface
  • Stimulates collagen growth for a youthful fullness

We also offer DeepFX, which is an advanced laser treatment that can even more effectively treat aged, sun-damaged or scarred skin. This procedure is typically combined with ActiveFX to give a complete treatment called TotalFX. During the DeepFX procedure, fractional laser beams target the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating tissue regeneration and collagen production throughout the area. The laser can:

  • Smooth deeper wrinkles and lines
  • Improve the appearance of scars and other spots
  • Leave the skin fuller and more youthful

Fractional treatments only treat a fraction of the skin, leaving bridges of untouched skin that aid in the healing process and reduce healing time.

DeepFX uses a very narrow laser microbeam to remove columns of tissue deep in the skin. The body then heals the channel which stimulates immediate new collagen growth to improve the appearance of wrinkles, scars and fine lines. ActiveFX uses a larger beam to treat the upper layer of skin to remove unwanted pigmentation, promote new skin regeneration, and improve fine lines and texture.

Ultrapulse Encore ActiveFX and DeepFX by Lumenis

Our device is the Ultrapulse Encore ActiveFX and DeepFX by Lumenis, and it combines the precision of a CO2 laser with the speed of fractional resurfacing technology to provide unprecedented facial rejuvenation.

Your dermatologist will customize a treatment plan for you which will include ActiveFX, and likely include treatment with DeepFX for certain areas that need additional deeper rejuvenation.

While recovering from fractionally ablative laser resurfacing, patients are instructed to avoid strenuous activities and to clean the treated area regularly with water, saline or dilute acetic acid (vinegar soaks) in order to assist in healing the treatment site. Some patients may prefer to remain at home until healing is well underway. Once new skin covers the treated area, cosmetics may be applied to conceal any residual redness which may persist for a few months. When healing is complete, the skin’s appearance will be dramatically improved in tone, texture and tightness.

It can sound involved, and to some degree it is, but the results can speak for themselves. Dr. Lener has utilized this treatment every year or two for over seven years for maintenance and rejuvenation of her skin.

Treatment of Red/Vascular

Many red/vascular lesions can be treated very effectively with our IPL, at the same time as the pigmented lesions. But certain types of vascular lesions do not respond well to any IPL. Our dermatologists can assess that, and may recommend you be treated specifically with our Pulse Dye laser. We are very fortunate to have access to this laser, in addition to our other lasers, as it is the most effective treatment for certain vascular conditions.

Our Vbeam® Perfecta Pulse Dye Laser by Candela has been a gold standard laser treatment for vascular conditions for over 20 years. Treatment with the Vbeam Perfecta is fast, safe, effective and comfortable, thanks to a large spot size and a patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD™). Combined with Perfecta’s advanced micro-pulse technology, the DCD minimizes post-treatment bruising and offers patients little to no downtime after treatment.

The range of conditions our Pulse Dye Laser can treat includes:

  • Areas of Redness
  • Uneven Pigmentation
  • Rosacea
  • Acne
  • Facial & Leg Veins
  • Poikiloderma
  • Angiomas
  • Hemangiomas
  • Port Wine Stains
  • Warts
  • Scars and Stretch Marks
  • Venous Lakes

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal uses pulsed laser energy to remove unwanted hair from a targeted area, while leaving surrounding skin unharmed. Common areas on which laser hair removal is performed are the chin, upper lip, chest, underarms, back, bikini line and legs.

There are many benefits to having unwanted hair removed through the use of laser therapy. They include:

  • Hair is precisely targeted
  • Procedure is quick
  • Hair reduction results are permanent (for 90 percent of patients) or long-lasting

A handheld device that emits intense laser pulses is moved across the area, focusing on individual hair follicles. Laser hair removal can be uncomfortable for some patients. Those that do experience discomfort describe it as a hair being tweezed. Your doctor may use methods to manage your pain as necessary based on the area being treated and their discretion.

Hair growth takes place cyclically, in three stages. The most effective laser hair removal takes place during the anagen (full-growth) stage, because the hair follicles in this stage are susceptible to laser energy. But, because all hair is not in the same stage of growth at any given time, several laser treatments, usually between three and five, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, are necessary. To some extent, the length of treatment depends on the texture of the patient’s hair, and the location from which it is being removed.

The most common complication of laser hair removal is the regrowth of the unwanted hair. Frequently, however, the hair that regrows is finer and lighter than the hair that was removed. Usually, regrowth can be addressed with a few additional treatment sessions. Other complications are rare, but may include skin irritation such as blistering and crusting, changes in pigmentation or texture of the skin, and scarring at the removal site.

Our GentleMax Pro™ is a dual platform laser made by Syneron Candela, using both a 755nm Alexandrite laser for lighter skin tones and a 1064nm Nd:YAG laser for darker skin tones. This device is the gold standard for effective hair removal in skin types I-VI, which includes most skin types. Our device includes the 20/22/24 mm Large Spot Delivery System which makes our GentleMax Pro the fastest dual wavelength hair removal laser in the market for large body areas. This laser’s patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) technology not only protects the outer layers of your skin with a cooling burst of cryogen, but also leads to increased patient comfort for the duration of the procedure.
