Cosmetic Concerns

Brown Spots/Photo-Damage/Age Spots

Brown spots on the skin are a common sign of aging. They are usually caused by an accumulation of sun exposure over the years, although they may be due to trauma or injury. Brown spots tend to appear on the parts of the body that are most likely to be uncovered and unprotected from the sun, such as the face, hands, arms, shoulders, and feet. They vary in size but are larger than freckles. Brown spots are very common in people over the age of 40.

While brown spots are not medically dangerous, many people who develop them find them cosmetically unappealing. Most diagnoses of brown spots can be based simply on your dermatologist’s examination of the skin in question. If the spot appears irregular, your doctor may recommend a biopsy be performed to ensure that no skin cancer is present. Avoiding spending time in the sun and regular use of sunscreen can prevent them from worsening as well as the occurrence of new brown spots.

Wrinkles

Wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process. They occur most frequently in areas exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, back of the hands and forearms. Over time, skin gets thinner, drier and less elastic. Ultimately, this causes wrinkles - either fine lines or deep furrows. In addition to sun exposure, premature aging of the skin is associated with smoking, heredity and skin type (higher incidence among people with fair hair, blue-eyes and light skin).

There are several treatment options available to help eliminate or reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, such as topical retinoids and wrinkle creams, laser treatments, chemical peels, BOTOX®, Fillers, and more. While these procedures cannot completely reverse the effects of aging on your skin, they are often effective in minimizing the appearance of wrinkles through ongoing treatments.

The best prevention for wrinkles is to keep the skin moisturized and use sunscreen and sunblock to prevent additional damage from the sun.

Loss of Facial Volume

As we age, our skin begins to lose its fullness and sagging, wrinkling and hollowing may occur. However, there are a number of effective treatment methods to combat this loss of facial volume. The most common treatment option is the injection of dermal fillers.

Redness & Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes facial redness, acne-like pimples, visible small blood vessels on the face, swelling and/or watery, irritated eyes. This inflammation of the face can affect the cheeks, nose, chin, forehead or eyelids. More than 14 million Americans suffer from rosacea. It is not contagious, but there is some evidence to suggest that it is inherited. There is no known cause or cure for rosacea.

Research conducted by the National Rosacea Foundation found that the leading triggers for rosacea are:

  • sun exposure
  • hot or cold weather
  • emotional stress
  • wind
  • alcohol
  • heavy exercise
  • spicy foods
  • hot baths
  • heated beverages
  • some skin care products
  • humidity
  • indoor heat

While there is no cure for rosacea and each case is unique, your doctor will probably prescribe oral antibiotics and topical medications to reduce the severity of the symptoms. When the condition goes into remission, only topical treatments may be needed. In more severe cases, a vascular laser, intense pulsed light source or other medical device may be used to remove any visible blood vessels and reduce excess redness and bumpiness on the nose.

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat varicose and spider veins. These unsightly veins are treated by injecting a sclerosant solution into the damaged veins, causing irritation and eventual collapse of the affected veins. Sclerotherapy has been used throughout the world since the 1930s and remains the primary effective treatment for varicose and spider veins.

In certain cases, we will refer you to a vascular surgeon if the physician feels that none of the treatments above are effective.

Excess Hair

While our bodies are almost completely covered in tiny, fine hairs, for some people hair may be more noticeable or troublesome. Unwanted hair can be embarrassing for many people, especially women, and can lead to low self-confidence, restricted clothing options or constant shaving or waxing to remove the hair. These problems most often arise in people with light skin and dark hair, although anyone can experience excessive or unwanted hair on the face or body.

Unwanted hair can develop on the body from a number of different causes. Some patients may be genetically predisposed to develop excessive amounts of hair, while others may experience excessive growth caused by hormonal imbalances and bodily events such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause.

Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing’s syndrome or certain medications can lead to a medical condition known as hirsutism, which involves an overproduction of male hormones in women.

Submental Fullness (Double Chin)

Submental fullness, or extra fullness beneath the chin, is something that can be caused by weight gain, genetics, or aging. Sometimes the fullness or “double chin” does not go away regardless of exercise or diet. Additionally, it may make one appear heavier or older than they are. Kybella is a nonsurgical process used for reducing the appearance of fat below the chin.
