Sun Safety 101: 6 Tips for Protecting Your Skin

Spending time outdoors can do a lot for your emotional, mental, and physical health. Unfortunately, it can also damage your skin and increase your risk of developing skin cancer. You don’t need to avoid being in the sun, however. You just need to take some sun safety precautions, including the ones shared below by our team at The Dermatology Center at Ladera in Ladera Ranch, CA.

1. Choose Your Time Wisely

UV rays tend to be at the strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. When possible, avoid direct sunlight during these times. If you need or want to be out during these hours, the next steps are even more important.

2. Stick to the Shade

You can gain the wonderful benefits of sunlight and outdoor time without being directly in the sun. Choose a shady area to limit your direct exposure. Also, consider investing in a portable tent for areas where there is no readily available shade.

3. Dress Appropriately

Wearing long pants and long sleeves in the heat doesn’t sound fun, but it can be very beneficial to your skin. If you can’t stand the heat in such clothing, opt for clothing that is certified for UV protection. Also, wear a hat with a brim and sunglasses.

4. Layer the Sunscreen

Whether you are in direct sunlight or not and no matter what you are wearing, it’s always important to wear sunscreen. Look for one that is at least SPF 15 and that is for both UVA and UVB rays. It should be reapplied after sweating or getting wet, as well as every two hours.

5. Keep an Eye on Your Skin

It’s important to watch for any changes to your skin. This can include anything from new moles to patches of discoloration and rashes. If you do notice changes, visit your dermatologist as soon as possible.

6. Visit Your Dermatologist

Whether you notice changes or not, you should schedule a dermatology appointment at least once a year. Your dermatologist can help spot any changes or potential signs of danger and, when necessary, begin treatment early. Additionally, they can provide you with personalized recommendations for keeping your skin protected.
